Teenage love always burns fast and bright and leaves a mark that never quite fades away. KICK THE PAST, an Eostre's Baskets story, shows us that no matter what age you find your soul mate, true love can overcome any obstacles.

Even though Austin Ward and Gabriela Esperanza were heading in totally different directions after high school, a promise ring and declarations of everlasting love surely were enough to guarantee forever. As Gabriela joins the Army and Austin heads off to college, their relationship struggles to keep up with the differences in their lives. Stolen weekends together just aren't enough, and eventually the couple must come to terms with the fact that they are no longer the naïve kids they used to be.

When the former lovers meet up once again, CIA Agent Ward has been tasked with keeping a prince from being assassinated. Imagine his surprise when he realizes that the mercenary hired to kill the prince is none other than "G" Esperanza. Even though Gabriela's life took a dramatic turn after leaving the Army and joining a private company, she's become exactly what Austin accused her of being all those years ago: a cold blooded killer. She's ready to get out, but to do so she must complete this one last job.

Austin and Gabriela enter a deadly (and erotic) game of cat and mouse. When fiery tempers and stubbornness clash with duty and desire, there may only be losers in this dangerous path they're on. In the end, it may take an Easter miracle and a little help from Essie Sundae and her special baskets to save their lives…and their love.

KICK THE PAST is a standalone novel in the Eostre's Baskets collection that features a "sexily ever after" story when your hero or heroine receives an adult basket filled with exactly what they need to fix their relationship problems. All books in the collection are linked by these baskets but can be read independently.

My first impression of the young couple was completely different than the one I ended the book with. At first, Austin seemed desperately in love with Gabriela while she comes off as bitchy and undeserving of his adoration. He is unwaveringly sure about her and their relationship, even though it seems that she is way less certain of a lifelong outcome with her "white boy" lover. In the beginning, I had a really tough time connecting with her and she came off as selfish and unwilling to make any concessions to make their relationship work. It didn't occur to me until later that I was judging Gabriela for not making sacrifices…yet neither did Austin.

I don't want to give too much of the plot away, but I will say that once I realized that Austin was just as much to blame as Gabriela for the demise of their relationship, I found myself much more able to see where she was coming from when she said that love just wasn't enough anymore. Their reunion when battling for the life of the prince was completely explosive. The fireworks between them were just as incredible as when they were kids, maybe more so. The fact that they didn't deny their love for one another and took full advantage of their mutual intimate knowledge was incredibly sexy. In fact, the sex scenes were some of the yummiest and intense MF encounters I've read in a while!

Even though I started off with a lukewarm feeling toward this couple, their realistic dialogue and honest encounters left me with some excellent warm fuzzies when it was all said and done. There's something to be said for being older and wiser, especially when dealing with someone who knows you all the way down to your soul! Great book, Ms. Edwards.
