From its intense, explosive opening to its heartwarming conclusion, LIKE MAGIC is a beautifully told and surprising story. Though it might come in a small package, every page is full of love and destiny and the magic of finding precisely where you are meant to be.

Ian Hannigan is convinced his day could not get any worse. After a day spent trudging around the seedy part of town looking for development properties, he returns to his car—or the place he thought his car should be—only to realize he is stranded in a torrential rainstorm without a cell phone and without a way to get home. Hunkering in the alcove of an Occult and Curio shop, Ian suddenly finds himself standing with a simply beautiful and irresistibly seductive woman who seems to want nothing more than Ian.

But following what might just be the most explosive, passionate and confusing experience of his life, Ian can't help but wonder if he's been blessed or cursed. Because Raven, his savior from the storm, is a witch, who had apparently been summoning a lover just before his arrival. And while Ian is flattered by her obvious desire—and amazed by his own for her—he gave up believing in magic a long, long time ago. Will one night in her arms convince him that he and Rachel were brought together for a reason?

One of the most remarkable parts of this book was how the pace and the feel of the narrative changed when Ian and Raven were together. In the opening scenes, Ian is harried, unaware of the world around him and fundamentally alone. During his steamy meeting with Raven, he still manages to maintain his distance from the events and, in a sense, with the reader. But when he makes the decision to go into Raven's shop and starts to see her for who she is and not who he imagines her to be, the magic of the story begin to shine through. There is such a sense of calm thorough the scenes when Ian and Raven were together, even in their most heated, intense moments, that there is no doubt they are meant to be together and that they what the other has been lacking for so long. That connection between them makes their night together that much more passionate and intense, and made it seem just possible that their meeting was indeed a bit more than mere coincidence.

The only thing I would have liked is details regarding the events following the morning after. It's clear that both Raven and Ian are willing to make changes in their world-view—Raven becomes a bit more grounded, while Ian learns to dream—but these are glossed over. I'd have been very interested to hear more about their time apart, as well as their time together, especially regarding Ian's experiences. But, in the end, there is no question that both characters were profoundly changed for the better, and willing to live a life that neither could have imagined before their meeting.

LIKE MAGIC is a fun, sultry well-written and surprisingly touching story of two lonely souls finding fulfillment that makes the most of its thirty-or-so-pages. Raven's explanations of her magic were fascinating, but what captured my attention most of all was the magic between her and Ian, and all the possibilities that their lives now hold.
